Caring for and Displaying Your Factory x Props

How to Care for and Display Your Factory x Prop Replicas

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Scythe Replica-Factory X

Factory X' replicas are made of a variety of materials and require different methods of care:

Bladed Items
Our bladed items have stainless steel blades. These are unlikely to rust, but keeping the blade free of fingerprints and coated with a light coating of an oil similar to WD-40 is a good idea. Please do not use vegetable oil as it can become rancid. Remember, these are display pieces; they are designed only to serve as decoration . If used for anything other than display, a blade that is untempered (as ours are) will not break, but will simply bend and stay bent, and if it is sharpened, will not hold an edge. So keep them clean, keep them free of the oils and acids of finger prints, and enjoy their beauty.

The hilts, handles or heads of these items will be made of wood, resin, cast zinc with a patina or electroplated coating, or vinyl or leather wrap.

Please be careful with wooden handles to avoid splinters. Polishing or oiling the wood should not be necessary and may change the color of the wood.

Resin handles are fragile. Please be careful to leave them in their displays to keep them safe from bumps that may cause chipping or breakage.

Electroplated, patinaed or painted surfaces should be dusted with a dry, soft cloth. Cleaning solvents could cause discoloration or removal of the coating. Since these pieces are for display only, please handle them carefully and selectively.

Grip wraps of leather may be wiped or cleaned with a leather conditioner if the leather appears to be becoming dry. Please note that the application of a leather conditioner may change the color of the wrap. Vinyl wraps should not require any special care, other than a dusting with a dry soft cloth or a wipe with a vinyl cleaner.

Jewelry
Most of our jewelry items are silver or gold plated and the “gemstones” are glass. A few special editions will be solid precious metals and semi-precious stones. For silver or silver plated items, you should use a polishing cloth to keep the tarnish off of the pieces. Silver polish can be too abrasive for fragile jewelry items and can get stuck in some of the crevices and obscure the “stones”. Please enjoy these pieces and wear them, but handle them in a manner befitting fine jewelry.

Wooden, Resin, Fiberglass, Cloth, Aluminium and Framed Items
Replicas of special fan-favorite items are made of a wide array of materials. While these are all display pieces, not designed for daily use, they are quite easy to care for. To clean these items, simply dust them with a dry cloth. There should not be a need to use any cleaning solvents on them, as these are only display pieces. If additional cleaning is required, please refer to any warning on the cleaning product to make sure the cleanser will not harm the particular material(s) from which your replica is manufactured.

Display of Prop Replicas
Many of our prop replicas have plaques that are designed to be hung on the wall and will hold the replica for display. To hang these display plaques, please follow these instructions:

1. Choose an area of the wall out of direct sunlight and out of the flow of foot traffic so that the replica and nearby persons will be safe.
2. Affix holding brackets to the front of the plaque using the indentations as guides for placement of the hardware.
3. Locate a stud in the area you wish to hang the plaque.
4. Drill a hole (slightly smaller in diameter than the hanging devices you will be using) into the stud.
5. Screw the fasteners into the hole.
6. Hang the plaque on the screw.
7. Carefully place your replica on the holding brackets on the plaque.
8. Enjoy!

Note: Hanging the plaque without securing it into a stud is not recommended. This poses a risk of having the item rip out of the wall and falling. This can damage your walls, your prop and persons nearby.

Items without a wall mounting plaque are designed to sit on flat, even surfaces. Choose areas that are out of direct sunlight and are out of high traffic areas so your replica and nearby persons will be safe
