With Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End due in theaters May 25, recent reports are sending mixed messages about the future of the blockbuster Disney franchise produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski.
Australia’s Herald Sun, which got the chance to screen eight scenes from the still unfinished third installment, asked Bruckheimer about the likelihood of a fourth Pirates film. “This is the end,” he informed the paper. “This is the end of the trilogy.”
But what about spin-off films featuring just Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) or perhaps a new set of characters? “Whether there will be another movie depends on whether we can create something new and different, but this is the end,” Bruckheimer said. But he added, “This is the end, but whether one of the characters or a couple of the characters continue on, it’s a possibility. … Certainly, in a moment at the end of the film there is a hope that something else might happen.”
