Stan Lee

Disney and Stan Lee joins forces. Read on:

Stan Lee and his POW! Entertainment have joined forces with Walt Disney Studios to develop new entertainment properties of all forms.

The companies announced the multi-year first look deal today that could potentially lead to feature films based original ideas developed by Lee and the POW! team.

Oren Aviv, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, said in statement, “Stan Lee is a living legend in the world of pop culture and his characters and stories have been the inspiration for some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters. We’re very excited to be working with him and his talented team in creating some incredible new motion picture experiences. Stan has so many fantastic new ideas for films, and we can’t wait to get started.”

POW! currently has around 20 new franchise characters in development including El Lobo, Chameleon, Thunder Rider, Whirlwind, Doubleman, Mightbird, and Blaze. Additionally, they have another 20 in early development, and 40 yet-to-be introduced. Needless to say, it could become a pretty substantial library to draw from.

Hostel Part 2

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

hostel-2-blog.jpg

Hostel Part II is sick and twisted but still “damned” good. Read on:

For some reason sequels always seem to get a bad rap. Yet if you really take the time to examine the sequel, specifically as it implies to genre films in the Sci-Fi and Horror vein, more often than not the sequel is far superior, in terms of story, character development, gore and suspense/thrills, to the original. Of course a lot of sequels simply suck, too.

Trying to nail down why some sequels succeed and some fail is tough. One could say that some succeed due to the injection of new blood (different screenwriter, different director, different actors) which often brings a fresh, new approach to the familiar material. Yet just as many sequels done by the original team of creators have succeeded as those done by a new team and vice/versa. Basically, we could sit here and argue the merits of each for hours, but the simple fact remains, some sequels fare better because of new creative blood and others fair better thanks to old blood. You just never can tell.

With Hostel: Part II the original creator is back on tap. This would be director/screenwriter/producer Eli Roth, who has actually improved upon the first Hostel film, delivering more gore, but more importantly delivering a more streamlined, and dare I say, mature spin on the slasher genre. He joins the ranks of George Miller and Sam Raimi as a wild genre director who takes his initial concept and builds upon it, giving us more refined bits of the first film, but put through a meat grinder and made a bit more palpable. Hostel was ground chuck, Hostel: Part II is top sirloin.

Knocked Up

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

knocked-up-image-blog.jpg

Knocked Up delivers. Read on:

From the creative team that brought you 40 Year Old Virgin comes the next installment in the “fish out of water” comedy romance genre. Knocked Up tells the story of Ben (Seth Rogen) and Alison (Katherine Heigl) — two individuals from completely different walks of life. Alison is an employee of the E! channel, promoted at the beginning of the film from a position behind the camera to on-air talent status. Ben, on the other hand, is your stereotypical free-spirit — he lives with four slacker buddies (played hilariously by Jonah Hill, Martin Starr, Jay Baruchel and Jason Segel), is developing a pseudo pornographic online business venture and spends most of his time getting high.

The two cross paths when Alison decides to celebrate her promotion with her sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann). A night at the club and several drinks later, Ben and Alison end up back at her place for a one-night stand. The morning after is less than pretty — while Ben is clearly enamored by her, it’s obvious that Alison was seeing him through beer goggles the night before. The two go their separate ways and it isn’t until eight weeks later that Ben hears from Alison again… with news that she’s pregnant. Shock, denial and comedy ensue. After a brief will we/won’t we debate, the couple decides to have the child and make a go at having a relationship. The rest of the film is spent focusing on the ups and downs of two inherently different people trying to make a relationship work, all set atop the backdrop of an impending childbirth.
