Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in In the Bourne Ultimatum

The Bourne Ultimatum proves that Hollywood films don’t have to be mindless to be fun. Read on:

Jason Bourne indeed comes home in The Bourne Ultimatum and, boy, what a homecoming. The Paul Greengrass-directed sequel is a slam-bang conclusion to one of the most unique and adult action franchises ever produced by a major studio, and leaves the audience hoping that series star Matt Damon will reconsider his statement that this is the final Bourne film.

Ultimatum is the most relentlessly-paced entry in the frenetic series, starting off in mid-action just weeks after The Bourne Supremacy left off. An injured Jason Bourne, a.k.a. David Webb (Damon), escapes from Russia and is making his way through Europe when he reads an article about himself in Britian’s The Guardian newspaper.

Seeking out the article’s author, reporter Simon Ross (Paddy Considine), Bourne knows Ross’ source had to be a high-ranking CIA official. He wants to meet Ross’ source not to kill him, but to find out more about his true identity and who made him what he is today.

Ross’ article threatens to expose the super-secret Blackbriar operation, a clandestine ops group within the CIA that makes the previous films’ Treadstone group look like the Watergate burglars. The CIA, obviously, doesn’t want the bloody truth about what Blackbriar is doing exposed so they send a team to snatch Ross. The reporter’s surprise savior turns out to be Bourne, whom the CIA mistakenly believe is aiding Ross and wants to expose Blackbriar. This leaves Blackbriar boss Noah Vosen (David Strathairn) one option: kill Bourne and anyone else in order to protect the agency.

Black Snake Moan

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Read the Australian review for Black Snake Moan and then run to the nearest video store and purchase the DVD. Read on:

Apologies for the deliberately transparent and shallow sub-heading, but if you’re between the age of 15 and 18, I bet you clicked. There was also a subtle alternate reason for this intentional, deliberate creative choice – that’s the theme of this review, you see. Black Snake Moan, the latest film from director Craig Brewer – known for his critically lauded helming of Hustle and Flow a couple years back – is a careful and delicate production. Everything is very deliberate.

It is evident that Brewer has been watching and listening to a few related creative sources. First of all, Black Snake Moan is steeped in southern American blues and bluegrass music and culture. Shot in and presumably set in Tennessee, Brewer has composed a homage to the deep-fried south. The setting brings back memories of the rich characters found in Coen Brothers flicks like O Brother Where Art Thou?, and there are some generous nods to Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee for their influence on his tone and scene composition.

Samuel L. Jackson, ‘Lazarus’, is a washed up blues guitarist-turned-farmer whose life is on the skids. Christina Ricci, ‘Rae’, is a sexy, dirty and broken teenage nymphomaniac who is dating panic attack prone Justin Timberlake, ‘Ronnie’, aiming to head off to war to defend the US of A.

Paths cross as Ronnie hops the military bus and leaves Rae to her own devices. She breaks down and goes on a sex and drugs binge, where she ends up raped and beaten -something we get the impression has happened a little too often in her past. Lazarus comes upon her in a vulnerable and dishevelled state and decides to focus his time and energy on nursing her back to health and saving her from her self-destructive ways in an attempt to repair his own broken heart and distract himself from the bottle.

Prince Caspian Previewed

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Fan’s of Narnia received a thrill, last week, at Comic Con as new details about Prince Caspian was released. Read on:

Updates on Prince Caspian captivated attendees at last week’s Comic-Con, as fantasy enthusiasts got their first good look at the new film, which is still in production. Producer-director Andrew Adamson addressed fans over a live feed, showing off some terrific-looking armor that the Telmarines will be wearing to battle. The equipment sported by Miraz’s men includes a molded metal mask that is somewhat reminiscent of old Greek masks, although the rest of the armor is quite Medieval-Europe in style.

Costume designer Isis Mussenden was responsible for outfitting the Telmarine army, and for those of you who know how much work the Lord of the Rings crew went to, her feat was hardly less heroic. “There’s two things I’m really proud of this time,” Mussenden told ComingSoon.net, “and one is the Telmarine army, because I’ve never done an army before. And let me tell you, it’s a task. We manufactured every single thing they wear, from their shoes to the armor. We had four armorists in Prague working the leatherwork. Thousands and thousands actually almost up to a million studs were put onto the brigandines, but it was a real task. We built a 330 strong army and that doesn’t even sound like that much, but I have to tell you that is a lot of pieces, it was over 3000 pieces.”

For more on that, check out our Comic-Con report here.

Speaking of the Medieval look, effects specialists Howard Berger and Dean Wright told ComingSoon that Caspian, taking place many centuries after The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, has a darker, grittier look to it, drawing more on real-life historical design and less on the fantasy idealism of the first movie.

“[Prince Caspian is] dramatically different, actually. It’s much more wild, and I think the whole theme of this film has a much grittier tone to it, and it’s reflected in both the production design, and the character design, and ultimately it will impact all the visual effects.
