Love in the Time of Cholera

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

love_in_the_time_of_cholera_small.jpg

Synopis:
Spanning a half-century in the complex, magical and sensual city of Cartageña, Colombia, this sweeping romantic epic tells the story of a man who waits over fifty years for his one true love.

Academy Award® nominee Javier Bardem stars as Florentino Ariza, a poet and telegraph clerk who discovers his life’s passion when he sees Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) through the window of her father’s villa. Through a series of passionate letters, Florentino gradually awakens the young beauty’s heart, but her father (John Leguizamo) is furious when he learns of the affair, and vows to keep them apart forever.

As the years go by, Fermina marries the sophisticated aristocrat Dr. Juvenal Urbino (Benjamin Bratt), who has brought order and medicine to Cartageña, stemming the waves of cholera that mysteriously besiege the city. He sweeps her away to Paris for years, and when they start their lives together back in Cartageña, she has all but forgotten her first love.

But Florentino has not forgotten her. Now a wealthy ship-owner, Florentino engages in a series of affairs but still yearns for Fermina. His heart is patient, and he will wait a lifetime for the chance to be with her again.

Based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Márquez.

Blade Runner is Back

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

t_5177.jpg

Blade Runner – The Final Cut is now in select theaters and will continue making the rounds nationwide until January 2008. Blade Runner – The Final Cut will appear on DVD December 18.

Blade Runner, Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic, is back on the big screen in celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary. The limited theatrical run of the completely re-mastered director’s cut, Blade Runner: The Final Cut, will take place in select cities throughout the fall/holiday season in conjunction with the DVD release of the new edition.

Sir Ridley has taken a page from George Lucas’ playbook and completely restored the film. He’s tweaked old special effects, added some new ones, and has included never-before-seen footage and extended scenes.

The flick began playing earlier this month in New York and Los Angeles and will continue to roll out nationwide through January.

Things We Lost in the Fire

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

halle-berry.jpg

Halle Berry lights up the screen Things We Lost in the Fire, while turning in her best performance since Monster’s Ball.

Metaphorically speaking, we don’t see the fire — just the ashes — the formless dust left behind in the wake of a transformative event.

It’s not the easiest way to tackle a story of family tragedy, but Danish director Susanne Bier (Brothers) pulls off a small movie miracle by turning the empty space of a lost loved one into the central character of her English-language debut, Things we Lost in the Fire.

A non-linear examination of loss that stars Halle Berry as a grieving widow and Benicio Del Toro as a recovering heroin addict, the movie opens with a brief but ideal moment in the human experience: A father and son standing next to a pool, sharing a moment of palpable, mutual love.

Before the scene even has a chance to reach its final beat, the opening credits float across the screen. When we rejoin the narrative a few seconds later, we’ve already crossed the invisible line separating one reality from the next.

For the next two hours, we watch the characters struggle to make it to the other side as they wrestle with the death of the family patriarch.

Brian (David Duchovny) was the perfect guy: Attentive, flattering, kind, good-looking and unconditionally loving, he was the backbone of the Burke family. To his wife, Audrey, (Berry), Brian was more than a great father and provider; he was the man who made everything all right, the man who could put his arms around her and make her feel safe and loved when the monsters loomed at night.

Run Fat Boy Run

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

run-fat-boy-run-poster1-small.jpg

Synopsis:
Dennis (Simon Pegg) is an ordinary guy. He’s a little overweight and he smokes, but he’s nice, charming and unassuming. However, five years ago, Dennis did something that wasn’t so nice. On his wedding day to his pregnant fiancée Libby (Thandie Newton), Dennis did a runner. He just couldn’t go through with it. He didn’t think he was good enough for Libby, so instead of ruining her life, he ruined her big day.

Now, five years later, Dennis realizes he made a big mistake. He’s still in love with Libby. He still sees her all the time because of Jake (Matthew Fenton), their five-year-old son, but all romantic ties have been severed. Libby’s now seeing Whit (Hank Azaria), a charming professional from the City, and Dennis takes an immediate dislike to him. Whit is casual, easy-going, successful and good with Jake; much to Dennis’s annoyance. How can Dennis compete with him?

In direct contrast to Whit’s sleek lifestyle in the City, Dennis is a mere security guard for a ladies retail store. He doesn’t earn much money and he’s well behind on his rent, something which his landlord, Mr. Ghoshdashtidar (Harish Patel), doesn’t take lightly. Mr G’s daughter Maya (India de Beaufort) is particularly intent on evicting Dennis and replacing him with a much more reliable tenant. Compared to Whit’s effortless abilities, everything Dennis attempts seems to end in disaster. Even when he wants to take Jake to see “Lord of the Rings: The Musical,” he finds himself in trouble with the police for trying to buy from a ticket tout. There is no help forthcoming from Dennis’ feckless best friend Gordon (Dylan Moran), whose life is just as much of a mismatch. Gordon’s main sources of interest are the poker games held at the back of a piano store with a bunch of misfits: Grover, Claudine and Mickey, overseen by the imperious Vincent (Simon Day).

Dennis feels demoralized and overwhelmed by Whit’s long list of achievements. In a last-ditch effort to prove to Libby that he’s changed his ways, Dennis impulsively announces at her birthday party that he will run in the same London Marathon that Whit has been training for. But does Dennis have the stuff to trade his cold feet for running shoes?

Once anchored by the love and comforts of their 11-year marriage, Audrey is now adrift. Impulsively, she turns to Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro), a down-and-out addict who has been her husband’s close friend since childhood.

Desperate to fill the painful void caused by her husband’s death, Audrey invites Jerry to move into the room adjacent to their garage in the hope that he can help her and her children cope with their sudden loss. Jerry is facing a daily battle to stay off drugs, but in his unexpected role as surrogate parent and friend to Audrey’s son and daughter he finds a core of inner resilience.
