Into the Wild

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Freshly graduated from college with a promising future ahead, 22-year-old top student and athlete Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsh) abandoned his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and walked out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. What happened to him on the way transformed this young wanderer into an enduring symbol for countless people.

Was Christopher McCandless a heroic adventurer or a naïve idealist, a rebellious 1990s Thoreau or another lost American son, a fearless risk-taker or a tragic figure who wrestled with the precarious balance between man and nature?

Based on a true story and the bestselling book by Jon Krakauer.

Cast: Emile Hirsch, Vince Vaughn, Marcia Gay Harden, Hal Holbrook, Catherine Keener; Directed by: Sean Penn

Three American brothers (Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman) who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other — to become brothers again like they used to be. Their “spiritual quest”, however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins.

She enlists the help of a politically-connected college friend, Alan Smith (Peter Sarsgaard), an aid to Senator Hawkins (Alan Arkin), who uncovers the troubling fact that Anwar has been shipped off to a third World country for interrogation on the orders of the CIA’s head of terrorism, Corrine Whitman (Meryl Streep).

Love strikes in the worst possible circumstances for widower, single dad and popular family advice columnist Dan Burns (Steve Carell) when he falls for a beautiful stranger (Juliette Binoche) in a bookshop — only to discover she’s the very same woman his charismatic brother (Dane Cook) is about to introduce as his incredible new girlfriend at their parents’ annual get-together. As the weekend gets underway, Dan and Marie scramble to hide their mutual attraction to each other, resulting in a series of hilariously awkward situations. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) who has come to her aid — even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince (James Marsden) back home — she has to wonder: can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?
