In The Golden Compass, the forthcoming epic fantasy film from director Chris Weitz based on the first book in the His Dark Materials novel series by Philip Pullman, young Lyra Belaqua (played by Dakota Blue Richards) has many friends in her fight against the sinister forces that seek to destroy free will. She joins a tribe of seafaring Gyptians, encounters a mysterious witch, and meets a grizzled balloon-flying Texan. But Lyra’s most important alliance is with Iorek Byrnison (voiced by Ian McKellen), a fearsome ice bear from the frozen land of Svaldbard.
