Wanted US Review

Friday, June 27th, 2008

wanted-b.gif
Wanted is “An action packed, visually arresting comic book movie.” Wanted opens this weekend (June 27th).

Wanted, based on the graphic novel by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, follows twentysomething Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy, doing a convincing job in hiding his Scottish accent) — an office drone who one day discovers that he is actually the son of the world’s greatest assassin. Before this revelation, Wes suffers panic attacks brought on by his overbearing boss at his soul-sucking accounting job and the blatant affair carried on between his girlfriend and best friend.

Wesley is pulled — literally and violently — out of his ho-hum everyday life by Fox (Angelina Jolie), an alluring mystery woman who tells him about his special heritage and then proceeds to save him from Cross (Thomas Kretschmann). After an absurd but exhilarating car chase-shootout sequence, Fox reveals to Wesley that he must take his father’s place in The Fraternity, an ancient league of assassins led by Sloan (Morgan Freeman). The Fraternity metes out justice as determined by the Loom of Destiny (an over-explained plot device built around murderous weavers — yeah, that’s right).

Wes then undergoes an excruciating training regimen (including beatings, guns and knives) until he accepts the Fraternity’s motto: Kill one, save a thousand. He must then carry out a few hits in order to prove his mettle before he is sent after Cross, whom we learn is a rogue member of the Fraternity out to kill his former comrades one by one. Wes gradually learns to enjoy and embrace his newfound vocation, finally feeling empowered after a lifetime of being a nobody. But soon, he learns that some of his colleagues aren’t as righteous as he first believed.

Wanted UK Review

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

wanted-b.gif
According to the Wanted UK review, Wanted is “quite the best time to be had in a cinema thus far this summer.” “People, the summer starts here.” Well, we’ll see.

Wesley Gibson doesn’t have a lot going for him. Working in a dead-end job, he spends his days being bullied by his overbearing boss, while back home his best bud is busy banging his ballbuster of a girlfriend. Wesley is a loser with a capital ‘L’, until the day he meets Fox, a mysterious beauty with a big gun, a fast car, and an offer Wes can’t possibly refuse.

So begins Wanted – quite the best time to be had in a cinema thus far this summer. For it turns out Wes’s long-lost father was a member of the Fraternity – a centuries old league of assassins carrying out the orders of fate – and it’s now the prodigal son’s time to follow his destiny, ‘grow a pair’, and become the superhuman soldier he was always meant to be.

IGN visited the set for Hellboy II and the had the privilege to watch several scenes from the film, plus they checked out some cool concept art.

Last Friday, IGN UK visited a post-production house tucked away in Soho, London where filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is hard at work frantically editing his blockbuster sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army. He graciously offered to screen several brand new sequences from the film for us, with explicit instructions to tell the world about what we saw. So here goes, though remember… although we weren’t screened anything particularly spoilerish, there’s plenty of information within. So if you want your Hellboy fresh, then click away now…

Int. Army Base, New Mexico – Night

First up, a pre-credit prologue sequence in which an 11 year-old Hellboy is in his pajamas, brushing his massive teeth. The tyke playing him — apparently in heavy prosthetics — looks freakishly similar to Ron Perlman. In steps dad, Professor Broom (played by a rakish looking John Hurt), who begins telling him the story of the titular Golden Army…

Iron Man Set to Bolt past $300 Million At Box Office

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

iron-man.jpg
Iron Man is set to become the first picture this year to hit $300 million at the box office onThursday.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – “Iron Man” will become the first picture of the year to hit $300 million at the North American box office on Thursday.

Through Tuesday, the Marvel-produced comic book adaptation had rung up an estimated $299.3 million in the United States and Canada. And with recent daily grosses for “Iron Man” of no less than $680,000, there was no question about its blowing past the rarefied $300 million mark Thursday.

Last year produced a trio of $300 million movies, led by “Spider-Man 3″ with $336.5 million. It took just 23 days to hit $300 million, while “Iron Man” required 51 days. Still, expectations were not nearly as lofty for the Robert Downey Jr. picture before it opened on May 1.

Last May kick-started two other $300 million grossers: “Shrek the Third” ($322.7 million) and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” ($309.4 million).

Among summer 2008′s other big openers, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” had earned $279.5 million through Tuesday. Once considered a lock for the $300 million club, the latest installment in the Steven Spielberg franchise might have to claw its way to that level
