Forgetting Sarah Marshall will resonate with the ladies, because of its strong female lead.
It’s no secret that the Judd Apatow-branded style of comedy skews heavily toward the male demographic. The hero is always a man with a strong group of buddies and he’s typically oppressed by the woman he loves — whom he comes to reach a romantic understanding with by the end of the picture. It’s also no secret that these films are very, very funny — for both women and men. To that end, Forgetting Sarah Marshall falls suitably in line with the likes of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up. But its agreeable female leads, painted here as fully developed characters, are sure to resonate more positively with the ladies in the audience.
Struggling musician Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) has spent six years idolizing his girlfriend, television star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). He’s the guy left holding her purse in paparazzi photos and accidentally omitted from acceptance award speeches. But his world is rocked when she leaves him for another man. After an unsuccessful bout of womanizing and an on-the-job nervous breakdown, Peter sees that not having Sarah may just ruin his life.
To clear his head, he takes an impulsive trip to Oahu where he is confronted by his worst nightmare: His ex and her tragically hip new British-rocker boyfriend, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand), are sharing his hotel. But as Peter torments himself with the reality of Sarah’s new life, he finds relief in a flirtation with Rachel (Mila Kunis) — a beautiful resort employee whose laid-back approach tempts him to rejoin the world.
