Luke Skywalker’s lightaber from George Lucas’ Star Wars will be heading into orbit aboard the space shuttle. Read on:

Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, the famed prop from George Lucas’ Star Wars films, will blast into space aboard the space shuttle Discovery, which is scheduled for launch on Oct. 23.

In a Star Wars studded ceremony Tuesday in Oakland, Calif., the prop was handed over to officials from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) who will put the lightsaber on display at Space Centre Houston in Texas before the flight.

Storm troopers, Darth Vader, R2-D2 the erratic robot and even the giant Wookie Chewbacca were on hand to give the light saber a proper send off. It had been in storage at Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in California.

“We have had a relationship with NASA on a small scale with small events,” said Tracy Cannobbio, a spokeswoman for Lucasfilm Ltd. “We just thought, we should do something together. It was a no-brainer.”

George Lucas on the Future of Star Wars

Geroge Lucas and Harrison Ford

I this article on IGN.com, George Lucas talks about the possiblity of another Star Wars movie. Read on:

This past weekend, George Lucas was honored at the Museum of Television and Radio’s William S. Paley Television Festival. Fittingly, the conversation was mostly about Lucas’s television work, both past and present, including The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the two upcoming Star Wars oriented television series he is developing. However, Lucas also touched upon his future film work, including whether there might be any more Star Wars movies.

Lucas called them “the mysterious other Star Wars movies,” referring to ongoing fan speculation on whether there might ever be an Episode VII, VIII and IX. Lucas said comments he made long ago were misconstrued as absolute statements, explaining that when he first was making the Star Wars films and was asked about future sequels, he had remarked, off the cuff, “Maybe we’ll do another when the actors are all 80.” However, the writer/director than laughed and added that, “What I didn’t realize is, I’ll be 80.” Lucas noted that future Star Wars movies were, “An idea that seemed amusing at the time, but doesn’t seem realistic now.”

Indiana 4 Finally Set To Go!

Friday, January 5th, 2007

IndianaJonesBlogSmall.jpg

Harrison Ford is “pumped” to reprise his role as the irrepressible Indiana Jones in the fourth installment in the Indiana Jones series. Read on:

At long last, filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are officially ready to roll on the fourth installment in the Indiana Jones series. While speaking to the press on Friday, preparing for his duties as grand marshal of the Rose Parade, Lucas confirmed that production would get underway in 2007. “It’s going to be fantastic. It’s going to be the best one yet,” he told the Associated Press.

Further confirmation comes this morning, via the Hollywood Reporter, which claims that Steven Spielberg has placed the film at the top of his directing to-do list and that shooting may begin as early as June.

The screenplay, which was a sore spot in the development of the project for years, was approved several months ago after Spielberg crony David Koepp took a stab at it.

The story is still a mystery, but Lucas has hinted that the movie will be a “character piece” and that the plot will, not all that unexpectedly, involve supernatural elements.

During a previous chat with Empire Online, Lucas explained, “I discovered a McGuffin. I told the guys about it and they were a little dubious about it, but it’s the best one we’ve ever found. … Unfortunately, it was a little too ‘connected’ for the others. They were afraid of what the critics would think. They said, ‘Can’t we do it with a different McGuffin? Can’t we do this?’ and I said ‘No.’ So we pottered around with that for a couple of years. And then Harrison really wanted to do it and Steve said, ‘Okay.’ I said, ‘We’ll have to go back to that original McGuffin and take out the offending parts of it and we’ll still use that area of the supernatural to deal with it.’” Your guess is as good as ours.
