Luke Skywalker’s lightaber from George Lucas’ Star Wars will be heading into orbit aboard the space shuttle. Read on:

Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, the famed prop from George Lucas’ Star Wars films, will blast into space aboard the space shuttle Discovery, which is scheduled for launch on Oct. 23.

In a Star Wars studded ceremony Tuesday in Oakland, Calif., the prop was handed over to officials from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) who will put the lightsaber on display at Space Centre Houston in Texas before the flight.

Storm troopers, Darth Vader, R2-D2 the erratic robot and even the giant Wookie Chewbacca were on hand to give the light saber a proper send off. It had been in storage at Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in California.

“We have had a relationship with NASA on a small scale with small events,” said Tracy Cannobbio, a spokeswoman for Lucasfilm Ltd. “We just thought, we should do something together. It was a no-brainer.”
