Scott, Crowe and Dicaprio delivers the goods this weekend:

If Timecop taught us anything at all, it’s that two things can’t occupy the same space at the same time. Of course, that film was referring to the convergence of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s devastating roundhouse kick and eventually, Ron Silver’s malevolent late-’90s beard; but in his new film, Ridley Scott proves that even if “things” can’t coexist peacefully, then at least ideas can. Body of Lies, adapted by William Monahan (The Departed) from the novel by David Ignatius, expresses the provocative and profound notion that cynicism and hope can survive alongside one another, and occasionally, merge into a singular expression of both. It’s also this complexity and sophistication that makes body of lies not only one of the best films ever made about the Middle Eastern conflict, but an ambitious piece of entertainment that features terrific performances and a thoughtful, dazzling story.

Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed) plays Roger Ferris, a CIA operative who is neck-deep in double-crosses and conspiracies as he negotiates in earnest with defected terrorists for information in the Middle East. His superior, Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe), hands down orders and advice via telephone but is comfortably stationed thousands of miles away in a life of routine and domesticity. With one proviso – namely, that he always tells the truth - Roger brokers a tenuous deal with a Jordanian security officer named Hani (Mark Strong) in order to pursue an up-and-coming terrorist who is poised to become the next Osama Bin Laden. But when Ed decides to press another team into service to accelerate the pursuit, Roger finds himself caught between his superior and Hani, who is as feared as he is respected. Soon, Roger discovers that it’s not only his enemies that he must fear, but also his allies, as Hoffman and Hani’s race to apprehend the same criminal not only escalates tensions between America and Jordan, but endangers his life and that of a young nurse named Aisha (Golshifteh Farahani) with whom he has grown close.

Scorsese delivers another cinematic masterpiece with his latest film, The Departed. Beware potential spoiler here. Read on:

There’s a strong impulse to embrace Martin Scorsese’s latest movie The Departed just because it revisits territory that he practically mapped himself. The director’s recent ventures into period pieces and biopics have felt more like experiments or digressions; this, on the otherhand, rings truer to the oeuvre that established him as a singular cinematic voice. That said, there’s a big part of that vision that feels uncontainable, as if Scorsese can’t quite be pegged no matter how many times he returns to the same well.

All of which is why The Departed is at once a crowning achievement in crime cinema, and a slight letdown for a career iconoclast: Scorsese has produced another masterpiece more on par with previous works like Casino and Cape Fear than Goodfellas or Raging Bull. In other words, the director follows two personal projects with a more conventional but no less engaging piece of populist entertainment — in so doing restoring his well-earned reputation as both an earner and artist, but failing to genuinely expand his creative accomplishments beyond those he already achieved.

Based on the 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, The Departed stars Leonardo DiCaprio (The Aviator) and Matt Damon (Syriana) as a cop and a crook who infiltrate each other’s organizations at the behest of their scenery-chewing superiors. For DiCaprio’s Billy Costigan, it’s Queenan (Martin Sheen) and Dignam (Mark Wahlberg), a police Captain and Sergeant respectively who want to harness the young man’s conflicted impulse to do good; meanwhile, Damon’s Colin Sullivan answers to Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), an 800-lb. gorilla of a mob boss who owns the streets of Boston much to the consternation of the cops.

Marie Antoinette director, Sophia Coppola will use a wide variety of popular rock music to bring her feature to life. Read on:

For her third feature length film, Marie Antoinette, director Sophia Coppola once again continues to utilize the vast expanse of popular music to accentuate her vivid visual imagination.

Joining her on her quest for the perfect marriage between sight and sound was Music Producer and Music Supervisor Brian Reitzell, who also worked with Coppola on her two previous films, Lost In Translation and The Virgin Suicides.

While writing the script for the film Coppola turned to Reitzell and the two discussed in depth both the tone of the film and the music she was looking for. The result was that Reitzell went for a combination of vintage New Wave (Bow Wow Wow, Adam Ant), Opera, and contemporary music.

“We decided early on that our approach would be a collage of different kinds of music,” says Reitzell. “The soundtrack is a double disc, a post-punk-pre-new-romantic-rock-opera odyssey with some 18th century music and some very new contemporary music.”

The accompanying album is broken into a 2-Disc set featuring classics from the likes of Gang of Four and New Order on one disc and lush score elements on the other disc.

Marie Antoinette Movie Posters

Once again Sony comes out on top with their animated film, Open Season, which brought in $23 million in ticket sales in it’s premiere weekend. Also opening big is The Guardian, starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher, which brought in $17.7 million in its debut week end.

Jackass Number: 2 falls 52% bringing in $14 million in it’s second weekend, while School for Scoundrels openend in fourth place with $9.1 million. Jet Li’s Fearless fell to fifth place earning only $4.7 million for it’s second weekend showing.

However, the clear winner last weekend was The Last King of Scotland, which brought in $143, 000 over three days (it openend in only 4 venues in New York and Los Angeles). Since it’s Wednesday launch it has earned $172, 000 over 5 days. The Last King of Scotland (A Fox Searchlight release) will open nationwide on October 20th.
