Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

These are the new movies being released on DVD this Tuesday.

Quantum of Solace (Action/Thriller)

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano. Using his associates in the organization, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in Bolivia, giving General Medrano control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land which is, however, a main source of the South American water supply. In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists, and even ‘M’ herself, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop Quantum from getting its way.

Cast: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Gemma Arterton, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Giannini; Directed by: Marc Forster

Quantum of Solace

With Quantum of Solace arriving in theaters nationwide, tomorrow, IGN pays homage to Bond and his gadgets.

James Bond can remedy just about any situation with some smooth talk, an elaborate gadget, or a strong drink, but when the going gets tough and the cards are down, Bond calls upon his trusty sidearm. In the span of Bond’s 46-year cinematic history, Bond’s MI6-issued pistol has been limited to three pistols: the Walther P99, the Walther PPK, and in one instance, the Walther P5. Of the three variants, the Walther PPK has been the most frequently used gun in James Bond’s arsenal. The PPK has been featured in 16 of the 22 films made in the James Bond franchise. The P99, on the other hand, has appeared in 5 films.

The Walther PPK

The Walther PPK was released in 1931 by Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen, a German arms manufacturer that specializes in handguns. The model name, PPK, is short for Polizeipistole Kriminalmodell, which translates to Police Pistol Detective Model. The reasoning behind its detective-centric title is that the gun is easily concealable and ideal for undercover operations. The PPK is a semiautomatic blowback-operated pistol that features a double-action trigger mechanism and an exposed hammer.

The PPK was largely popular in both police enforcement and the civilian sector. The popularity and prominence of the gun throughout Europe is believed to be the main reason Ian Fleming assigned the weapon to James Bond. Prior to the success of the James Bond series, the gun was primarily associated with the Nazi military. During World War II, the PPK was a standard issue pistol for the Nazi police, pilots, and party officials.

007 Responds to IGN Readers

Forester Quantum Set Chile
Director Marc Forestor on the Chile set of Quantum of Solace

IGN was a part of a small group of online sites who were invited to London last week to participate in series of special events leading up to the November 14 release of Quantum of Solace. The sites were there to represent the fans whom had submitted questions for Daniel Craig and director, Marc Forestor to answer:

Marc Forster

IGN: Our first question from the readers of IGN is, “Since Quantum of Solace cannot have a love story involving Bond because Vesper is supposed to have been his first and only true love, what was the challenge in order to make this one a unique story like its predecessor?”

Marc Forster: I thought there’s this incredible opportunity here because we ended Casino Royale with Bond being at a very vulnerable state and he was sort of at a place where I felt one could really take advantage of and really pick up and sort of go a little further, a little deeper into the emotional ground of Bond. And I thought in the same time that it’s fascinating because you know… I created the character of Camille [played by Olga Kurylenko] as sort of a mirror image to Bond and a reflection of him. Basically, what I think is interesting about Bond — and I think also was a part of the sort of the success of Bond — is that Bond always kept mystery around him, and this mystery keeps you interested in the character.

In a sense I don’t think one ever wants Bond to talk openly about his emotional feelings. I think it wouldn’t be right because there’s still this hard shell of this tough man, but inside there’s a certain vulnerability. So I created Camille’s character sort of more to be a mirror image of Bond than to have a relationship or anything. So there’s definitely a sexual tension, but above it all it’s more like that she is very similar to Bond and speaks the words Bond sometimes would like to speak and through that we can feel sort of what Bond thinks, and I thought it would be a nice way to express that.
