Getting Jiggy with Saw IV

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

We found this preview for Saw IV; the next scheduled release in the Saw franchise. Read on:

Surely by now the Saw franchise needs no introduction to most of IGN’s readers. The first picture in this horror series came in 2004, made by a pair of then Australian unknowns (director James Wan and scripter Leigh Whannell), and its huge success is often credited with having helped to launch the current “torture horror” movement. Studio Lionsgate has since followed with a sequel each year, with Darren Lynn Bousman taking over the director’s chair. (Some spoilers might follow, so consider yourselves warned.)

Saw IV is next for the series, scheduled for a Halloween 2007 release, with Bousman back as director. IGN recently caught up with the helmer, producer Oren Koules, and the series’ star killer, Jigsaw himself, Tobin Bell, to discuss the new film. The first topic that came up during our chat was the notion that four movies in four years seems like a real grind, but as Bousman sees it, the filmmakers are only serving a larger game plan.

Review: Saw III Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Metal fans will love the new Saw III soundtrack. Read on:

Being the guy who is responsible for putting together a movie soundtrack album has the potential to be the best and the worst job ever. If a soundtrack does not fit with the movie’s plot and takes away from the storyline, the music is worthless. If the soundtrack does find a way to connect with the movie’s central theme and enhances the moviegoer’s experience, it help make the movie that much more memorable. Such is the power of music.

Count the guy who assembled the soundtrack to Saw III among those who gets to keep his job. The cuts on this album are a perfect fit for what has become one of the most successful horror movie franchises in the past decade.

The tricky part with using heavy metal as the soundtrack genre is that in the past decade, metal has become so sub-categorized and segmented that it would be very easy to get lost among the sub-genres and lose the audience. Metalcore or grindcore? Prog metal or speed metal? Black metal or Death metal? All are different and cater to different audiences.

Despite the fact that the Saw III soundtrack does cross musical sub-genres, it does so in such a way that the songs actually seem to fit together – not so much like a band creating a new album, but more like a record label taking a band’s songs and creating a greatest hits record. Featured on the album are bands like Slayer, Helmet, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Avenged Sevenfold and Ministry.

Truth and Rumors About Pirates 4.

Friday, October 13th, 2006

If the rumors are to be believed, Orlando Bloom will not be back to reprise his role as Will Turner, in Pirates 4. Read on:

The rumor mill has been buzzing with gossip that Orlando Bloom might not be in the planned fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

A report that first appeared in a British tabloid, The Daily Star, quoted an alleged Disney insider as claiming Bloom’s character, pirate Will Turner, would be killed off.

The unnamed source suggests the success of the franchise is due to Johnny Depp – who has already expressed interest in reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow beyond the initial trilogy – and Keira Knightley rather than Bloom. They also said that cost-cutting measures have rendered Bloom expendable.
