Saw IV

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Saw IV is the most compelling of the Saw movies and will grip and hold you to the end.

Even though they killed him off in Saw III, the latest installment in Lionsgate’s hit horror franchise — directed by Darren Lynn Bousman from a screenplay by Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan — offers fans the chance to see what turned engineer John Kramer (Tobin Bell) into the maniacal Jigsaw. While it’s not a franchise reboot-origin story a la Casino Royale, Saw IV delves deeper into the character and motivations of its central protagonist far more than the previous entries did.

Besides Jigsaw, Saw IV focuses most on SWAT Commander Rigg (Lyriq Bent), who is haunted by the loss of his colleagues — especially Detective Kerry (Dina Meyer) — at the hands of Jigsaw. Rigg is abducted by Jigsaw’s mysterious new helper and finds himself engaged in a game engineered by Jigsaw from beyond the grave. Since Rigg is obsessed with saving people, Jigsaw has set a series of interconnected traps that force Rigg to question his obsession and ask whether people must save themselves.

Getting Jiggy with Saw IV

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

We found this preview for Saw IV; the next scheduled release in the Saw franchise. Read on:

Surely by now the Saw franchise needs no introduction to most of IGN’s readers. The first picture in this horror series came in 2004, made by a pair of then Australian unknowns (director James Wan and scripter Leigh Whannell), and its huge success is often credited with having helped to launch the current “torture horror” movement. Studio Lionsgate has since followed with a sequel each year, with Darren Lynn Bousman taking over the director’s chair. (Some spoilers might follow, so consider yourselves warned.)

Saw IV is next for the series, scheduled for a Halloween 2007 release, with Bousman back as director. IGN recently caught up with the helmer, producer Oren Koules, and the series’ star killer, Jigsaw himself, Tobin Bell, to discuss the new film. The first topic that came up during our chat was the notion that four movies in four years seems like a real grind, but as Bousman sees it, the filmmakers are only serving a larger game plan.
