The Future of Shrek

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Stax over at IGN has the scoop on the upcoming Shrek projects. Read on:

In addition to Shrek the Third, which opens May 18, DreamWorks Animation is developing another feature film sequel as well as Shrek the Halls, a half-hour TV special set to air this Christmas. IGN got the scoop on both projects during a recent visit to the offices of PDI/Dreamworks Animation for a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of Shrek the Third.

Several of that film’s key personnel — including production designer Guillaume Aretos, art director Peter Zaslav, Head of Layout Nick Walker and Head of Character Animation Tim Cheung — all confirmed that they are working on Shrek the Halls in conjunction with their duties on Shrek the Third.

“It’s a half-hour Christmas special for ABC. We’re visiting some old environments and all the core groups of characters,” Zaslav said. He added that the special will focus on “mostly [characters] we’ve seen. There are a couple of new characters.” As far as the cast for the special goes, Zaslav confirmed that “it’s the same group [including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz] and it really integrates seamlessly, I think, with taking place where Shrek the Third left off.”

Zaslav hopes Shrek the Halls won’t be remembered the same unkind way that the notorious Star Wars Holiday Special is, “unless it’s cult classic kind of status. It’s actually going to be on for 15 years every Christmas. That’s the plan. So it has to be visually and story-wise up with all the Shrek films in terms of quality. So far it’s looking really good.”

When asked if Kris Kringle, a.k.a. Santa Claus, will make an appearance in Far Far Away, Zaslav coyly replied, “He might; he might.”

The ‘Shrek’ damsels let their hair down

Found this feature on USA Today, where they posted a sneak peak of Shrek 3 and all of the princesses, who will be appearing in the film (voiced by Amy Sedaris, Cameron Diaz, and SNL stars Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Cheri Oteri). Read on:

This time, princesses are doin’ it for themselves.

Cinderella got slap-happy with Snow White while fighting over Fiona’s bridal bouquet in 2001’s original Shrek.

But in Shrek the Third, due May 18, the pair work with fellow fairy-tale divas Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty to stop an attempted coup of Far Far Away.

Not that it’s easy to persuade the pampered royals to take action against Prince Charming (voiced by Rupert Everett), still bitter after losing Fiona (Cameron Diaz) to a smelly ogre.

“They are used to being rescued, not defending the kingdom themselves,” says Chris Miller, director of the second sequel in the computer-animated franchise that has grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. “Fiona has to convince them to shed that role and save their own happily ever after.”

That’s because Shrek (Mike Myers), who discovers he is ill-suited to rule the land himself, has gone off with sidekicks Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) to recruit the person who is next in line to the throne: high-schooler Artie (Justin Timberlake), who is destined to become King Arthur one day.

Some of TV’s funniest ladies, including Saturday Night Live cast members past and present, speak for the princesses.

“Amy Poehler is Snow White, the alpha dog of the group,” Miller says. “She’s a real pit bull.” Maya Rudolph lends what the director calls “her quiet coolness” to Rapunzel. Cheri Oteri is Sleeping Beauty, “a narcoleptic princess.” And Amy Sedaris (Strangers With Candy) steps into the shoes of Cinderella, an obsessive-compulsive cleaner who can throw a mean high-heeled pump if need be.
