Star Trek Casting Comparison

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

J.J. Abrams has assembled his cast for the upcoming Star Trek XI. Read on to find out how the new crew measures up to their predecessors.

Captain James T. Kirk

Actors: Chris Pine is in negotiations to take over from William Shatner. Pine’s schedule, however, is reportedly an issue so it’s possible that another actor (say, Poseidon’s Mike Vogel) may sit in the captain’s chair instead. Pine is a relative unknown to most audiences, with his most high profile films roles to date being Lindsay Lohan’s love interest in Just My Luck and as one of the kill-crazy Tremor brothers in Smokin’ Aces. At 27, Pine is eight years younger than Shatner was when he first portrayed James Tiberius Kirk, but since this film will supposedly be a “first adventure” story then that could work. Physically, Pine doesn’t bear too much of a resemblance to The Shat (especially the eyes), but we do think it’s ironic that one actor with thinning hair has been tapped to play another who was a trailblazer in the field of toupees and hair weaves.

Crowe Talks Trek Again

Russell Crowe

We found this article on IGN.con where Russell Crowe talks about his role in the upcoming Star Trek XI feature length film. IGN spoke with Russell Crowe earlier this week (see the video below) about the rumors — first reported by us — that Paramount would like to get him to play the villain in their new Star Trek movie. While Crowe wasn’t terribly forthcoming with us about the buzz, he did open up about it a little more in another recent interview.

Speaking with ExtraTV.com, Crowe said of the rumors that he’ll be starring in the next Trek, “Apparently. But I haven’t read anything. I can’t make a decision about anything until I read it so we’ll see what happens.”

While that’s far from a “not true,” it’s also far from a “hell, yeah” so time will tell.

Star Trek XI Movie News

Zachary Quinto (L) and Leonard Nimoy (R) at the Star Trek panel at Comic-Con

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy talk about the upcoming Star Trek movie. Read on to find out who is in and who is out:

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were on hand Saturday for the official Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, where they spoke about J.J. Abrams’ forthcoming big-screen reboot of the Paramount franchise.

StarTrek.com posted a transcript of the two actors’ appearance. Nimoy will film his role as the elder Spock “starting in December — a month after principal photography begins — and is scheduled for more work in February and March of 2008. Nimoy’s role as the older Spock is ‘not gigantic,’ but, ‘it’s more than a cameo.’”

Nimoy spoke fondly of Zachary Quinto, the Heroes star who has been cast as the younger Spock in the film. “He does resemble me, I think he’s believable as me, younger — but equally important if not even more so, he’s a very talented actor, and I’m honored to have him take over the role of Spock after I’m done,” Nimoy said.

Nimoy later admitted, “I don’t even know the story very well and I have to find out where Spock is and has been for all these years. I’m not really sure exactly where we are going to pinpoint or plug into Spock’s, sort of, character arc. … And I have to try to examine where he is now, where he exists now, what are his thought processes — is he more logical than he ever was, or less logical than he ever was? Is he more precise, is he calmer, is he more mellow, has he gotten cranky and crusty?”
