Mike Vogel to Play Captain Kirk?

Friday, September 28th, 2007

mike-vogel-image-blog.jpg

Rumor has it that Mike Vogel might be cast to play Captain Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek XI.

As director J.J. Abrams’ big-screen reboot of Star Trek prepares to go before cameras in November, an international hunt has been under way for actors to play the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. With the roles of Spock, Uhura and Chekov officially cast, the rumor mill has finally suggested who might be up for the leading role of Captain James T. Kirk, originated by Emmy winner William Shatner.

According to IESB.net, Poseidon actor Mike Vogel is the “front runner” to play Kirk. Vogel, 28, will next be seen in the much-hyped Abrams-produced horror flick known as Cloverfield. His credits also include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Rumor Has It.

Scotty Casting Buzz

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

truenorth-compston-blog.jpg

A Scottish actor has been chosen to play to Scotty in the upcoming Star Trek movie. Read on:

Reports from across the pond claim to reveal which U.K. actors are up for the role of U.S.S. Enterprise chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in director J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek movie.

TrekMovie.com points out two reports from Scotland’s The Daily Record that name Scottish actors who are in the running to play Scotty. One reported contender is Martin Compston, 23, whose credits include A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Monarch of the Glen, Sweet Sixteen and Neil Marshall’s forthcoming thriller Doomsday.

An unnamed “friend” of Compston’s informed the paper, “Martin has had a couple of callbacks for the part of Scotty. But they’re a way from making a decision on the part yet and there’s some stiff competition. … He has joked that he might look a bit too young for the part and worries it might be one of the rare examples of someone in Hollywood being held back because they look too young.”

Zachary Quinto (L) and Leonard Nimoy (R) at the Star Trek panel at Comic-Con

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy talk about the upcoming Star Trek movie. Read on to find out who is in and who is out:

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were on hand Saturday for the official Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, where they spoke about J.J. Abrams’ forthcoming big-screen reboot of the Paramount franchise.

StarTrek.com posted a transcript of the two actors’ appearance. Nimoy will film his role as the elder Spock “starting in December — a month after principal photography begins — and is scheduled for more work in February and March of 2008. Nimoy’s role as the older Spock is ‘not gigantic,’ but, ‘it’s more than a cameo.’”

Nimoy spoke fondly of Zachary Quinto, the Heroes star who has been cast as the younger Spock in the film. “He does resemble me, I think he’s believable as me, younger — but equally important if not even more so, he’s a very talented actor, and I’m honored to have him take over the role of Spock after I’m done,” Nimoy said.

Nimoy later admitted, “I don’t even know the story very well and I have to find out where Spock is and has been for all these years. I’m not really sure exactly where we are going to pinpoint or plug into Spock’s, sort of, character arc. … And I have to try to examine where he is now, where he exists now, what are his thought processes — is he more logical than he ever was, or less logical than he ever was? Is he more precise, is he calmer, is he more mellow, has he gotten cranky and crusty?”

Trek Talk!

Robert Orci, told IGN.com that Star Trek is set to go into production this November. Read on:

Robert Orci, screenwriter of the upcoming live-action Transformers movie, told IGN that his next project Star Trek is scheduled to go into production in November.

“It shoots in November,” Orci said during an exclusive interview with IGN. “We’re in preproduction right now and just started. We’re casting and hoping to have somebody by Comicon — we’ll find out. The script is written, and [it comes out] Christmas ’08.”

Orci remained mum about the film’s plot, he said he is confident that Star Trek XI will satisfy nonfans and longtime Trek watchers alike.

“We’ve sworn an oath to not really divulge anything,” he said, “but if you’re a fan who’s been tracking a lot of questions about people’s histories and about the history of Starfleet, there’s various gaps in the canon that if you were to get online and sample what people would want to see, you’d see some overlap in terms of what any fan who knows Trek would see. But the flipside of it is we want to make sure that this movie is absolutely for nonfans as well. In a way it’s going to be two different movies — if you’re a fan, you’re going to see a different movie. If you’re a fan, you’re seeing the black stripes of the zebra, and if you’re not a fan you’re going to see the white stripes. That was actually an amazing challenge, to see if that was even possible, and I think, hope, pray that we did it.”

Matt Damon May Play Captain Kirk?

Monday, December 18th, 2006

matt_damon_blog.jpg

Matt Damon to play the young Captain Kirk in the next Star Trek movie? Well, maybe. Read on:

It’s the holiday season and that means stories are scarce in the entertainment world. Here’s one constructed from various Internet rumours and half-quotes — enjoy!

According to SCI-FI Wire, Matt Damon would play a young Captain Kirk in the proposed next addition to the venerable Star Trek franchise.

Don’t set your phasers to HOORAY! just yet, Trekkies…Trekkers…whatever. Damon hasn’t been offered the role and, in fact, there’s no conclusive proof the role is even available.

Much speculation surrounds the plot of the upcoming Trek film, which will be produced and directed by Mission: Impossible III wunderkind, J.J. Abrams. Geeks everywhere have instantly assumed the flick will be a prequel of sorts, chronicling the first meeting between James T. Kirk and his Vulcan BFF Mr. Spock — hence the Damon connection to the role of Kirk. However the premise of the film still remains mystery.

William Shatner, who played Kirk in the original Star Trek TV series and films, had originally said (perhaps facetiously) the role is “uncastable” as no one could match his iconic turn as the randy spacefarer. However, Shatner has reportedly changed his mind, giving Damon the thumbs-up.
