Universal Studios plans a remake of the Korean monster movie, The Host.

Gore Verbinski is teaming up with Universal Pictures to oversee a remake of Korean monster movie The Host.

According to Variety, Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Verbinski will produce, with commercials director Fredrik Bond making his directorial debut with the big-budget project.

The original revolved around a giant mutant sea creature terrorising the Korean coast-line, and was told from the point of view of a family whose young daughter is snatched by the monster. As well as breaking box office records at home, it crossed over to become a major hit abroad.

The Host

If you’re a fan of the horror genre, then you’re sure to enjoy The Host. Read on:

South Korean import The Host is an oddity even in a genre chock full of weird entries: it revolves around a mutated, man-eating, acrobatic trout. (Okay, maybe it’s not a trout but it’s a fish of some kind.) For that reason alone, The Host is a noteworthy entry in the monster movie genre.

Co-written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, The Host follows slacker Gang-du (Song Kang-ho), who works at his dad’s (Byun Hee-bong) waterfront food stand. Gang-du has a young daughter, Hyun-seo (Ko A-sung), an archery champ sister in Nam-Joo (Bae Doo-na) and an ambitious brother, Nam-il (Park Hae-il). All in all, life is not terribly challenging for the unmotivated Gang-du.

That all changes one day. Bedlam explodes when a terrifying, mysterious creature rises from the Han River and makes its way onshore, attacking the fleeing citizens. Among those lost in the monster’s path of destruction is Hyun-seo, who disappears after being snatched by the creature. Gang-du is riddled with guilt over his daughter’s disappearance and his brother does little to assuage that.

Things get worse once the government becomes involved. The agents round up everyone who was at the scene of the attack — including Gang-du and the remaining members of his family — and quarantine them. The government claims the creature is the host of some kind of mysterious virus and that they could all have been infected.

Gang-du’s spirits are raised when he gets a cell phone call from his daughter, who is still alive but trapped in some unknown location. Gang-du and his family escape the quarantine center and go in search of young Hyun-seo in the now-forbidden zone, making themselves a target for both government agents and the monster itself.

Synopsis:
Gang-du (Song Kang-ho) works at a food stand on the banks of the Han River. Dozing on the job, he is awakened by his daughter, Hyun-seo (Ko A-sung), who is angry with him for missing a teacher-parent meeting at school.

As Gang-du walks out to the riverbank with a delivery, he notices that a large crowd of people has gathered, taking pictures and talking about something hanging from the Han River Bridge. The otherwise idyllic landscape turns suddenly to bedlam when a terrifying creature climbs up onto the riverbank and begins to crush and eat people.

Gang-du and his daughter run for their lives but suddenly the thing grabs Hyun-seo and disappears back into the river. The government announces that the thing apparently is the Host of an unidentified virus. Having feared the worst, Gang-du receives a phone call from his daughter who is frightened, but very much alive. Gang-du makes plans to infiltrate the forbidden zone near the Han River to rescue his daughter from the clutches of the horrifying Host…
