Scott Collura and Eric Moro from IGN.com interviews the cast of upcoming film, The Seeker.
Based on the popular The Dark is Rising series of fantasy novels by Susan Cooper (first published in the ’60s and ’70s), The Seeker — which opens this Friday — comes from the second book in the series. In it, a young man named Will Stanton (played by Alexander Ludwig in the film) learns that he is part of the “Old Ones,” a group of ageless warriors who are charged with battling the forces of the Dark. He becomes the “Sign-Seeker” and must quest to find the six magical Signs required to save humanity.
It’s your basic family film fantasy opus, in other words, much like Walden Media’s successful Chronicles of Narnia adaptation. And as with Narnia, both Walden and Fox have high hopes that this film can evolve into a franchise of films in the vein of other popular fantasy series like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Costar Ian McShane, who plays a mentor figure to young Will named Merriman Lyon, says that this film does indeed offer something new for audiences.
“I made him just a strange person who wants to live in the house on the hill,” says the actor, best known from HBO’s Deadwood, when asked if his character could be compared to Harry Potter’s Dumbledore. “In the book he is like seven-foot, three inches, the character. And Alex and I developed a good relationship and we played the characters as two people who meet. And I played [it] by not talking down to him and he didn’t talk up to me.”
The Seeker opens in theaters: October 5, 2007
