While recuperating at an Austrian Spa, during the 1920s, an American diplomat's son (Edmund) befriends a mysterious and dashing Baron (played by Klaus Maria Brandauer). The Baron engages the young boy with stories about his exploits in World War 1 and takes him on long trips. But soon, the Baron and Edmund's mother (Sonya) enter into an affair. This makes Edmund jealous and when he fails to break up the relationship, he leaves for Vienna to expose the affair to his father.
