When first released in 1950, Sunset Boulevard was a critical success attracting a wide range of positive reviews from the critics. The film garnered eleven Academy Award nominations, at the 23rd Academy Awards, and it won three Oscars for: Best Writing/Story/Screenplay, Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (Black and White) and Best Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.  Sunset Boulevard is generally recognized as a classic and it is frequently referred to as one of the greatest films in American cinema.
