The Kraken in Clash of the Titans (1981)
Lawrence Kasdan has signed on to pen the script for the remake of the 1981 epic, The Clash of the Titans. Read on:
Warner Bros. has hired screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan to write the script for their forthcoming fantasy remake of Clash of the Titans.
Kasdan has an eclectic list of credits, but hasn’t penned a genre picture since the 1980s. He is, perhaps, best known to IGN readers as writer of The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark. He also penned The Big Chill and The Bodyguard.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kasdan will pen a fresh take on the 1981 cult classic film, known for its groundbreaking special effects by Ray Harryhausen. Screenwriters Travis Beacham, John Gleen & Travis Wright have been previously linked to the project — it’s not known if any of their material will be retained, or if Kasdan will start with a clean slate.

Karl Urban, right, wages a violent, personal war against marauding Vikings
Karl Urban speaks to Stax of IGN.com about his starring role in Pathfinder. Read on:
IGN recently spoke with actor Karl Urban about his starring role in Fox’s forthcoming historical actioner Pathfinder. The Marcus Nispel-directed film stars Urban as Ghost, a Viking boy shipwrecked on the coast of America centuries before the arrival of Columbus. Although he was raised by the indigenous people who found him, Ghost is not truly one of them and remains torn between two worlds. When the “Dragon Men” return fifteen years later to conquer the Indians and plunder their land, Ghost stands with his adopted tribe against the ruthless invaders.
Urban believes the premise of the film — which, in terms of its look, owes more to fantasy than to straightforward historical movies — has its roots planted firmly in historical fact. “There’s Viking ruins and artifacts right down the east coast of America right into New Orleans,” the New Zealand-born actor explained. “So there is evidence to support the notion that it was indeed the Vikings who first discovered America a thousand years before Christopher Columbus.”
But he is quick to add that Pathfinder “is not a documentary. … In our film, (the Vikings are) really a bad bunch and we’ve really portrayed them that way. And with respect to the Viking culture, I think the Vikings in our film were probably closer to the berserkers than more traditional Vikings. From what I read, they were quite an extraordinary culture in their own right and had so much knowledge and they basically invented a democratic system.”
Although he co-starred in the mammoth Lord of the Rings trilogy, Urban was still struck by the rigors of shooting Pathfinder, which was filmed in frigid Vancouver. “We had one day where we shot on interior and the rest of it was shot 100% on location. That was a very grueling shoot. We were sliding into winter and I had the wardrobe lady outfitting me in a very traditional Indian costume, which consisted of a leather thong. [laughs] It was challenging at the time but, certainly, some locations were very dangerous. Thirteen members of our crew got injured while we were working in the cave system, either smacking into the roof of the cave or twisting their ankles on the slippery rocks. So it was a pretty tough, dangerous set at times.”

Tom Hanks as symbologist Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code.
Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Robert Langdon in Angels & Demons, the sequel to the The Da Vinci Code. Read on:
Sony wasted no time in developing the sequel Angels & Demons after The Da Vinci Code opened to blockbuster business last summer. The studio paid Da Vinci screenwriter Akiva Goldsman a whopping sum to reprise scripting duties on Angels, which, like Da Vinci, is based on a novel by Dan Brown.
Although the rumor mill buzzed about who might direct the follow-up (with Da Vinci helmer Ron Howard appearing to be the likeliest candidate), another major question looming over the project has been whether Tom Hanks would reprise his role as symbologist Robert Langdon (and how much it would cost to lure him back).

Sydney Tamiia Poitier is Jungle Julia in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof.
Weinstein is considering splitting Grindhouse. Read on:
Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse seemed like a “sure thing” for The Weinstein Co. The edgy flick has two great genre filmmakers who have cult followings, it’s gotten great media coverage, solid reviews, and the studio spent $30 million on marketing. But the exploitation flick-inspired double feature opened with just $12 million. Audiences just didn’t show up for it.
And now, TWC honcho Harvey Weinstein is pondering splitting the film in two, inserting addition footage, and re-releasing them individually — that’s straight from the horse’s mouth to DeadlineHollywoodDaily.com. That was already the plan for the European release, but we’ll see the same scenario play out in North America if Harv deems it doable.
