MORGAN FREEMAN in “Feast of Love”

Feast of Love “is smart, senstive and very good.”

The absence of a disqualifier is a beautiful thing.” These are words spoken in Feast of Love by Radha Mitchell’s character about Greg Kinnear’s, but they might as well be about the film itself. There are a lot of things that Robert Benton’s latest is not, including superficial, dispassionate or unsophisticated. At the same time, what it exactly is does not necessarily indicate that this will be either a sure-fire Oscar winner or even a box office smash; but certainly in a cinematic landscape filled with so many dramatic peaks and valleys, there are worse things than a modest but effective exploration of familiar but always creatively fertile themes.

In the film, Morgan Freeman plays Harry Stevenson, a professor who recently took a leave of absence from school and now spends his days with his wife Esther (Jane Alexander) and friend Bradley (Kinnear), the owner of a local coffee shop. Bradley thinks he’s happily married to Kathryn (Selma Blair), but after she meets Jenny (Stana Katic) their relationship rapidly deteriorates. As Bradley slowly rebuilds his life, he meets Diana (Mitchell), a real estate agent who is also canoodling with a married man named David (Billy Burke), while his employee Oscar (Toby Hemingway) is himself finding love with a free-spirited girl named Chloe (Alexa Davalos). Before long, all of these people’s lives are inextricably intertwined as they learn about the impermanence, unpredictability, and most of all, the opportunity that love provides them.
