The End of Narnia?

Monday, March 17th, 2008

prince caspian image.jpg
Disney will be shelving the Narnia series after The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

According to, “studio suits seem to be cooling to the idea of producing movie versions of all seven of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books. And unless The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian does truly huge box office once it’s released to theaters in May of this year … Disney & Walden Media (i.e. Mickey’s partner on the Narnia film series) will probably still go forward with production of the already-in-development The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. But after that … The Mouse would then mostly likely pull the plug on the rest of the proposed Narnia film series.”

If that happens then the studio will be left with a hole in its release schedules for 2011 and beyond; Disney and Pixar are said to be looking at bringing the Edgar Rice Burroughs literary series John Carter of Cars to the big screen to fill that franchise void.

Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian Trailer

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

The enchanted characters of C.S. Lewis’s timeless fantasy come to dazzling life again in this second installment of the seven book series, in which the Pevensie siblings – Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy – are magically and mysteriously transported back from World War II England to Narnia, where a thrilling, perilous new adventure and an even greater test of their faith and courage awaits them.

One year after the incredible events of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” the Kings and Queens of Narnia find themselves back in that faraway wondrous realm, only to discover that more than 1300 years have passed in Narnian time. During their absence, the Golden Age of Narnia has become extinct, Narnia has been conquered by the Telmarines and is now under the control of the evil King Miraz, who rules the land without mercy.

The four children will soon meet an intriguing new character: Narnia’s rightful heir to the throne, the young Prince Caspian, who has been forced into hiding as his uncle Miraz plots to kill him in order to place his own newborn son on the throne. With the help of the kindly dwarf, a courageous talking mouse named Reepicheep, a badger named Trufflehunter and a Black Dwarf, Nikabrik, the Narnians, led by the mighty knights Peter and Caspian, embark on a remarkable journey to find Aslan, rescue Narnia from Miraz’s tyrannical hold, and restore magic and glory to the land.

Prince Caspian Previewed

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Fan’s of Narnia received a thrill, last week, at Comic Con as new details about Prince Caspian was released. Read on:

Updates on Prince Caspian captivated attendees at last week’s Comic-Con, as fantasy enthusiasts got their first good look at the new film, which is still in production. Producer-director Andrew Adamson addressed fans over a live feed, showing off some terrific-looking armor that the Telmarines will be wearing to battle. The equipment sported by Miraz’s men includes a molded metal mask that is somewhat reminiscent of old Greek masks, although the rest of the armor is quite Medieval-Europe in style.

Costume designer Isis Mussenden was responsible for outfitting the Telmarine army, and for those of you who know how much work the Lord of the Rings crew went to, her feat was hardly less heroic. “There’s two things I’m really proud of this time,” Mussenden told, “and one is the Telmarine army, because I’ve never done an army before. And let me tell you, it’s a task. We manufactured every single thing they wear, from their shoes to the armor. We had four armorists in Prague working the leatherwork. Thousands and thousands actually almost up to a million studs were put onto the brigandines, but it was a real task. We built a 330 strong army and that doesn’t even sound like that much, but I have to tell you that is a lot of pieces, it was over 3000 pieces.”

For more on that, check out our Comic-Con report here.

Speaking of the Medieval look, effects specialists Howard Berger and Dean Wright told ComingSoon that Caspian, taking place many centuries after The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, has a darker, grittier look to it, drawing more on real-life historical design and less on the fantasy idealism of the first movie.

“[Prince Caspian is] dramatically different, actually. It’s much more wild, and I think the whole theme of this film has a much grittier tone to it, and it’s reflected in both the production design, and the character design, and ultimately it will impact all the visual effects.

Prince Caspian Casting News!

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Ben Barnes has won the coveted role of Prince Caspian in the sequel to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. But at what price? Read on:

With principal photography set to start next week in New Zealand, there has been a bevy of new developments on Prince Caspian, Disney’s sequel to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

First, the title role has been cast. English thesp Ben Barnes, soon to be seen in Matthew Vaughn’s Stardust, has won the coveted part of Caspian, but now faces a lawsuit over his decision to leave a stage play in order to work on the film.

Barnes, 25, was appearing as “Dakin” in a British revival of the Tony award-winning play The History Boys when he won the role of Caspian, according to

“Ben Barnes has decided to leave The History Boys early, before his contract is finished. It is something we are taking very seriously. He has accepted an offer to be in a children’s Disney film and we have had to fly Jamie King back at extremely short notice this week,” a spokesperson for the National Theatre advised The Times.

The National Theatre is reportedly “furious” at Barnes for exiting History Boys, which he has been a part of since 2006, and are considering suing him for breach of contract.

Prince Caspian Promo Art

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

Although the marketing campaign for Disney’s Prince Caspian has not yet begun, nonetheless, two promotional images are being circulated on the net. Read on:

Disney’s marketing campaign for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian hasn’t begun yet, but two promotional images found their way online this week, suggesting that real posters and other material could be on their way to theatres soon.

One image shows artwork of a majestic castle with the film’s logo superimposed, and comes from Disney’s online annual report for 2006. No, the fortress is not Cair Paravel, the idyllic royal seat we saw in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; that location lies in ruins, consumed by centuries of intrusion by the surrounding forests and the elements in the time period the story takes place. More likely, it’s the capital of wicked King Miraz, the usurper whom Caspian and the Pevensies will seek to overthrow.

Unfortunately, no name or other clues to the identity of the star-to-be have been released. But the chosen actor is very likely an unknown at this point.

Casting director Pippa Hall sent an email thanking those who auditioned for the part, reports “I know it’s taken a long, long time to get back to you with news of the casting on Prince Caspian — but it has been a terribly difficult process, and a very wide search,” read the note. “We are now sure that we have our Prince and wanted to thank you for becoming involved in the auditioning process and working with.”

Searching for Prince Caspian

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Auditions are being held in Britain for the actor who will play Prince Caspian in the upcoming “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Rescue of Prince Caspian.”

Also, in stores this week, Harper-Collins will be releasing an illustrated version of The Return to Narnia: The Rescue of Prince Caspian. Read on:

The star search is on for the actor who will headline The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Preliminary auditions have been held in Britain, with more to follow, reports; director Andrew Adamson will probably fly over to the UK in October to assist in the final selection.

The casting department is also seeking a large number of extras of Spanish or Mediterranean descent for the film — most likely, to play the Telmarines who occupy Narnia during the time the story takes place. According to the book, the men of Telmar had pirates as their ancestors — swarthy buccaneers who stumbled through a remote portal from our world to Narnia.
